Olympics Provide Aviation Opportunities

The 2012 Olympic Games will generate exceptionally high levels of air traffic to meet the expected 9 million tourists visiting this summer. This will mean London airports and its staff will need to adjust procedures to cope with the high volume of passengers. British airlines stress concern over the increase of non-scheduled flights and business jets.

The Games require 200,000 of varying workforce but in recent weeks Briton’s demand for Olympic jobs has risen by 300%.
Zenon has noticed this demand and seen an increase in short term summer contracts. These contracts have been for various aviation roles which are required to meet the forecasted half a million international visitors arriving by air.

Warnings of Worldwide Pilot Shortage Being Unable To Meet Flight Demand

ICAO stress concerns for the aviation industry’s ability to meet the growing demand for flights.

Forecasts show annual flights are to double to 50 million by 2030, and the number of aircraft to triple to 151,000.
However, there is a growing concern regarding the number of licensed pilots required to meet this demand - over 980,000 pilots, which equates to 52,500 pilots being trained each year. But in order to meet these figures, there would need to be 8,146 more flight schools to facilitate the increased capacity.

Although the shortage will affect flights globally, it will have worse impacts in Asia, Africa and Latin America, which are currently showing the largest passenger growth. Furthermore there will also be a shortage of 18,000 maintenance personnel.

On the other hand, these figures appear to have decreased since summer 2011 when ICAO forecasted a 2 million shortfall of aviation professionals.

To meet these demands, ICAO are trying new methods to attract young people to become aviation professionals

Helitech’s 25th Anniversary

This year Helitech celebrated its 25th anniversary in style, with displays that roamed out onto the concrete and into the air. Our Rotary specialist Ashley Ewen described the event as “a fantastic experience with a great vibe “and stated that “it was an excellent year to attend the famous Duxford event.”

For Zenon, it was also a successful business venture as they managed to meet and network with top professionals of the industry. Ashley had a rewarding day merging existing and new clients, as well as performing consultancy to some of Zenon’s highly valued candidates. Zenon attending Helitech Exhibition 2011

Zenon’s Helicopter Division Representative Ashley Ewen will be attending this year’s Helitech exhibition in Duxford, UK.

Coined as Europe’s largest rotary exhibition, Helitech is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. It is a three day event taking place on the 27-29th September. A number of static and aerial displays will be featured alongside top business personnel from the industry.

EU battles over plans to reduce airline carbon emissions

Controversial plans for reducing aviation emissions have reached a new height at the European HQ in Brussels and disputes are rumoured to continue.

Under this new plan they aim to create a ‘taxable’ credit scheme for airlines flying to and from Europe, from which airlines will gain significant credits for reducing their carbon emissions. By following these guidelines the EU Brussels HQ aim to set a standard for global industries to take more responsibility towards reducing their emissions.

Although this new scheme has come under fire by the IATA, which has claimed that the ruling is breaking the international codes by “imposing a ruling on international airspace”, there are still plans for legislation to go ahead effective January 1st 2012.

The cost to airlines is expected to reach $1bn and Zenon will be monitoring the negotiations very closely. According to Head of Recruitment Graham Merriman, “Zenon is proud of its global relationships and hopes that under this new policy a satisfactory conclusion for the industry can be reached to enable continual recruitment growth.”

ICAO reveals 2 million shortfalls for aviation professionals

Latest demand projection by ICAO has forecasted a rapid growth in air transport that will lead to a shortage of aviation professionals in the next twenty years. According to predictions, the retirement of qualified personnel and the rapid increase in air travel will lead to a huge gap of up to two million aviation personnel, targeting specifically pilots, maintenance personnel and air traffic controllers.
